A Letter from the Owner

Dear Art & Music Lovers,

On May 13th, The Art Lounge quietly turned five years old.

There was no grand celebration. No speeches. No fanfare. No social media announcement. Only an old neon OPEN sign that I bought five years ago, flickering a little more faintly than before, threatening to go dark for good.

It felt strangely symbolic.

As I stood there looking at that little sign, I found myself thinking about dreams. How quietly they begin. How much work they ask of us. How, if we’re lucky, they change us far more than we ever imagined they would.

I came to South Padre Island during COVID simply intending to shelter in place in a family condo. I joined the local Art Business Incubator, met a handful of artists, and somehow that simple decision became one of the greatest adventures of my life.

The Art Lounge was never just a gallery. It became a place of beauty and community.

Over the past two years, however, life began calling me somewhere else.

My dad and stepmom have both been living with dementia, and my dad has faced additional challenges. After many months of reflection, I realized what he needs most right now isn’t another visit. He needs someone nearby.

So this summer I’ll be returning home to Minnesota to spend these precious years with my family.

Recently I heard the story of a young man who left Ireland with almost nothing to go out and see the world. Over five (coincidently?) remarkable years he built an incredible business, experienced extraordinary adventures, and created a beautiful life—only to have everything stolen and find himself returning home with little more than he had when he left.

At first it sounds like tragedy.

But then you realize…

Those five years were never measured by what he possessed. They were measured by who he became and the moments he shared.

Some dreams are meant to last. Others are meant to change us.

The Art Lounge has done exactly that.

It challenged me in ways I never expected. It stretched me. It humbled me. It filled my heart until it overflowed. And for that, I will always be grateful.

The Art Lounge will close its doors at the end of July.

If you’ve ever thought about stopping in or want to return one more time, now is the moment. Come wander the gallery. Sit for a while.

Let’s make these final weeks beautiful together.

Before I close, there are a few people I simply cannot leave unnamed.

To Cristina Piecuch—thank you.

Cristina helped build The Art Lounge from the very beginning. For our first three years, she traveled incredible distances, navigating delayed flights and long journeys to be here for every opening night. Her talent, wisdom, encouragement, and countless hours of work helped shape this gallery into what it became. We rode the highs and lows together, and I learned so much from her. The Art Lounge quite literally would not exist without the love and work she poured into it.

To Vilma Torres—thank you.

For years, Vilma quietly worked behind the scenes, making sure every opening, every event, every class, and every ordinary day ran with warmth and grace. Her generosity, reliability, and heart carried me and this gallery more times than anyone will ever know.

To Jen Mulhern—thank you.

Through your Listening Sessions, you gave The Art Lounge something that could never be hung on a wall. You created a space where people felt seen, heard, and connected. You reminded us that art isn’t only something we experience with our eyes—it is also something we experience through stories, music, vulnerability, and genuine human connection. You helped transform this little gallery into a true community, and your kindness, wisdom, and generous spirit became woven into its soul. Thank you for sharing your gifts so freely with all of us.

To Ivan Benavides, Angel Loo, Carol Plumb, William “Hoss” Abete, Everett and Mary Jackson—thank you.

Your generosity, support, laughter and friendship mean the world to me.

As The Art Lounge prepares for its final chapter, we’re opening the vault.

Original artwork, studies, framed pieces, and special works from the gallery collection will be available at extraordinary prices—many for a fraction of their original value.
